This post provides instructions and a free printable to make the Out of the Blue care package.
A care package is a great way to show someone you’re thinking about them and that they mean a lot to you. There are so many fun and creative ideas for care boxes. This post builds a package based on the theme “Out of the Blue” and is loaded with items featuring the coloring blue.
My website contains affiliate links which means that I may receive small commissions for items purchased, which doesn’t change the price you pay.
Find a box.
Figuring out what you’ll use for your box is one of the first things you need to do. The size of the your box determines how much can fit inside and also determines how you can decorate your box.
While there are many sizes of boxes available, I decided to go with one that is 10″ x 7″ x 4″.
I liked this box because it is deep enough to hold various types of items. Click here to see the box that I got on Amazon. They’re available with Amazon Prime, so there wasn’t a shipping cost. I have a care package group so we’ll all use these. I also like this size because it doesn’t take a lot to fill it up.
Pick your sayings.
Here are a few ideas of sayings that play on the word “blue.”
- A little something out of the blue to remind you how much we love you.
- No need to feel blue when so much love always surrounds you
- Roses are red. Violets are blue. Sugar is sweet and so are you.
- So blue without you.
Please leave any of your “blue” saying ideas in the comments below.
Create printouts with your “blue” sayings and quotes.
Measure the size of your flaps and insides of the box.
You’ll need to know the size of each of the flaps you’ll be covering with paper. And if you’ll be covering the inside of your box, measure those as well. I used Microsoft Word and created text boxes the size of the box sides and flaps. Then I typed my sayings into those text boxes.

I bought bulk packages of 8.5 x 11 solid color card stock paper from a craft store and printed my sayings onto them. I decided to share my printable for this project FOR FREE here. If you use the boxes that I did (linked above) this will be super simple and fast for you.
Cutout decorative items and adhere them to your printed pages.
I had a sheet of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper full of blue flowers. I cut a couple strips of the scrapbook paper for two of the sides inside my box. Then I cut around some of the flowers on the paper and glued those to my printed pages.
Fill the box with blue items.
There are so many great BLUE items. I actually couldn’t fit all of the items I selected below.
Apply shipping label.
I love these Avery labels that I got on Amazon! You can go the Avery website and there are dozens of great templates. I can quickly find something cute here that fits my theme. I covered our addresses below with card stock for privacy reasons. (These labels make it easier for me to recycle my boxes.) I actually found several great designs for the Out of the Blue theme, but went with the simple one below.
