This wall yarn hanging was inspired by Pottery Barn Teen.
When we were shopping for my daughter’s college bedding at Pottery Barn Teen, we came across darling boho yarn tassel garland. Unfortunately, the price tag on the garland was out of our budget. After some thinking and talking, we decided to use the Pottery Barn Teen tassel garland as inspiration to DIY the garland shown below. At the end of this post, you will find a video with instructions for how to make this project.
Supplies We Used:
- Container of wood beads (from Michaels)
- 4 skeins of yarn (I used four different colors) – I used all four skeins, so if you’re making one as full as mine, you’ll need four skeins to complete the project. I used 33 tassels in my garland. Each skein makes about 12 tassels.
- Scissors
- Needle with big eye
- Nails, tacks, hooks, command hooks – whatever you’ll use to hang the tassel garland
Cut and prepare a long strand of yarn.
I cut a 6 foot stand of yarn for this project.
Thread the needle with one of the yarn and tie a knot.
Tie a double knot on the other end of the long strand of yarn.
Thread yarn with wood beads.
Thread approximately 50-60 wood beads on the stand of yarn.
Hang string of beads on the wall and prepare for garlands.
Hang the boho yarn tassel garland on the wall. Figure out the kind of draping you want for your wall so that it’s ready for the tassels.
Split the beads in half, leaving 1-2 beads in the middle (I’d recommend 2 even though I only did one in the middle).
Hang tassels on the string of yarn.
Start in the center of your string and hang a tassel onto the yarn simply by tying a double knot with the tassel yarn. The center of the garland should have the longest tassel strands.
Continue tying the tassels onto the garland, leaving 2-3 wood beads between each tassel. Vary the lengths of the tassel yarn to create different heights of the tassels. As you work your way to the ends, begin to lessen the height of the tassel strings, making them shorter on the sides than in the center.
Trim the excess yarn from the tied tassels.
Cut the excess yarn from the tied tassels. Cut close to the knot. This will clean up the look of the yarn garland.
How to make the tassels
If you need help making the tassels, please take a look at my DIY Yarn Tassel video that I created for this project (shown below). The tassels are really easy to make, but they do take a few minutes each. With 30ish tassels to make, this means it will take you a couple of hours.
