Tissue paper shred is easy to make and an inexpensive option for a vase filler, gift bag or gift basket.
Now that I’m working on creating centerpiece ideas for the upcoming graduation party, I’ve been looking at vase filler options. After looking at many options, I remembered why I often turn to tissue paper shred as a vase filler.
Below you’ll find instructions along with photos explaining how to create tissue paper shred, which can be used as a vase filler, centerpiece filler, gift basket filler, gift bag filler… you get the idea. I’ve also placed a video below containing my short tutorial, showing just how easy it is to make your own.
Materials Needed:
- Tissue Paper
- Scissors
HOW TO MAKE IT:
Pick your tissue.
This is the fun part because there are so many colors and patterns. Consider mixing it up a bit. Mix a solid with a pattern. Mix a couple of coordinating patterns. Try holiday-themed tissue papers.
Next, unfold the tissue once, just to get it to the longest length.
Then, begin to cut thin strips of tissue.
I typically cut the strips about a centimeter wide, but feel free to make the strips thinner or wider if desired. Cutting up half the tissue package will make a lot of tissue shred!
Finally, the best part, fluff the tissue (AKA take the layers apart).
Once you’re finished cutting the amount you’re estimating you’ll use, you can begin to separate the tissue layers from the cut sections. I start with the end and rub my fingers together to get it to come apart. Or you can pick up one end and shake it and that will typically loosen the layers. Continue doing this process until your tissue is fluffed.
Stuff tissue in your container.
Fill your container with the tissue paper shred. Your tissue paper vase filler will look awesome!
Trim shred that is hanging over your vase or container.
I don’t like to keep pushing all the shred down because I don’t like it to be crushed. Once I fill the container, I simply cut off the pieces that need to be trimmed.
Finish off your project!
Once your container is full of shred, you can add whatever other components you have planned to finish the project. If you want an idea of how to use tissue paper vase filler to make an easy and inexpensive project see my St. Patrick’s Day vase decor project. You can adapt this project to any holiday or even to an everyday decor theme.
I will be using tissue paper shred as a vase filler for many of my upcoming graduation projects. Even when I have painted or non-see through containers, I like the shred to peek out of the top of them.
