Miniature Decoupage Easter Baskets Made from Seed Pots Make an awesome DIY Dollar Tree Easter idea!

I just finished creating my newest Dollar Tree Easter idea, miniature decoupage Easter baskets. My inspiration for this project began when I came across the seed starter pots at the Dollar Tree. The pots were so tiny and I knew they’d be perfect to hold a few pieces of Easter candy. And with 12 pots in one package, it made each one only 8 cents. I had to buy them.
In the video below, you’ll see how I easily transformed the little seed pots into darling miniature decoupage Easter baskets, an AWESOME Dollar Tree Easter idea. You can either set these little baskets around your home as DIY Easter decor or you can give them to friends, teachers, and family. Hope you like them!
Materials/Tools:
- Seed starter pots (shown below)
- Tissue paper (used to decoupage the outside of pots & as Easter grass)
- Twine
- Candy
- Mod Podge
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Foam brush
- Scotch tape
- Scissors
Prepare strips of tissue paper for decoupaging.
With the tissue paper still folded, I cut strips that are about 1″ wide. Then cut those strips down to pieces that are about 2″ long.
Apply Mod Podge to seed pot and cover with tissue paper pieces.
I started at the top of the pots, applying the glue to the inside of the pot and the outside of the pot, about 2″ deep on each side.
Then I folded pieces of tissue over the top of the pot, working my way all the way around the pot. Covering a little bit of the pot on the inside is good because the “Easter grass” won’t fill the basket to the top.
Once you apply the tissue paper, use the foam brush to apply a coat of Mod Podge to it. This will brush out any creases or folds and will help the tissue stick to the pot.
Then, turn the pot over and Mod Podge the bottom. I criss cross the pieces of tissue across the bottom until it is fully covered.
And then I move on to the sides, using layers of Mod Podge and tissue to cover the pot. It takes several layers of tissue (3-5) to get it covered well.
Once the pots are covered with tissue, let the Mod Podge dry.
Prepare “Easter grass”
I used green tissue paper to make tissue paper shred for my Easter baskets.
I cut very thin strips of tissue from the package of tissue and then shook each strip to fluff the tissue. Click here for my blog about making tissue paper shred.
Prepare & attach basket handle.
Cut three 11″ strips of twine (mine was from Dollar tree). Tape the strands to a surface (e.g., table, cutting board). Braid the three strands of twine.
Place a piece of Scotch tape on each end of the braid. This will keep it from coming undone and it also makes it easier to glue your twine into your Easter basket.
Glue the twine about 2″ deep into the basket on each side. This ensures that the tape on the ends of the twine won’t be visible when the grass and candy are put inside.
I really like how this braided handle turned out!
Put “grass” and candy into the basket.
Since these baskets are so tiny, I trimmed my strips of grass so they fit better into the basket.
I think these are just darling! Can’t wait to share this Dollar Tree Easter idea with friends. And they’re super cheap, under 10 cents each (not including the candy).
I’ve already begun to work on my second project with these little pots and will do another posting this week!
